Madeline wants to tell Isabella something important.
Madeline knew she was glaring when the third guy veered away from her at the bar.
She would normally be flattered but at this point she didn’t care. Isabella was late. By at least forty minutes.
And all she got was a text that said:
Car trouble, will keep u updated.
No apologies; just waiting. Madeline checked herself in her make up mirror again. Her skin glowed with the effort of her make up. Her curly hair was actually in a tamed curl phase right now.
She had hoped Isabella would see her and give her a compliment.
Sometimes she felt like she lived for Isabella’s compliments. As she sipped her third drink she considered heading home. That is when her friend burst through the doors.
“Im sorry! I’m sorry!” Isabella plopped down in the seat next to her. Her dark skin held a sheen of sweat.
“Did you run here?”
“Yes! These subways are crazy and I was already late,” Isabella huffed. “Plus you know I sweat easy.”
They fell into easy conversation after that. Madeline didn’t stay mad for long and was soon cackling about the stories from Isabella.
“And then, the child had the nerve to tell me they didn’t piss themselves. I could see the piss on their pants! They literally did it, then lied!” Isabella huffed as she munched on her bar snacks.
“Huh, I wish my co-workers had the excuse of being three years old to cover for them. Someone said they missed work because they had to get their tonsils taken out. They forgot they told me that a month ago when they didn’t show up for a shift.” Madeline worked as a retail store manager and swore she was going to leave the store.
Isabella loosened her up in easily with her talk. Madeline felt herself moving closer on instinct. As their shoulders brushed Madeline decided it was the right time.
Now or never.
“Hey, Izzy. I just wanted to tell you that I really enjoyed seeing you.”
“As always, it’s a pleasure!” Isabella took a sip of her drink without thinking the better of it. “Oh! And I have good news!”
“Okay, can I ask you something first?” Madeline let the desperation sneak into her voice hoping Isabella would slow down.
“No, wait! It’s great. Listen, I have a new guy I’ve been talking to!” Isabella flashed her phone as her voice rose with excitement.
The rest of the night kind of dimmed but Madeline put on a good show. Honestly the best she could think of.
“What! Sis! How did you hold this secret in?” fake enthusiasm filled the young woman’s voice. She kept questioning her close friend to not arouse suspicion. She was also holding off so that Isabella wouldn’t realize she never asked her question.
After learning about Mason and all his great qualities Madeline called it a night. She didn’t even have to fake being tired because it was past midnight. She had to open the store the next morning so she needed to hurry back.
As they hugged goodbye she was relieved to find she made it through this whole ordeal without embarrassing herself.
When she finally fell into bed that night she received a text from Isabella.
Girl, I am the worst friend. What did you want to tell me earlier??
She pretended to fall asleep.
